Inventions and Visions

WPW Group Exhibition at the San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center (SFVACC)

JUROR’S STATEMENT
I made my selections for this juried show based on my interpretation of "Inventions and Visions" as being an abstract idea/approach; therefore most of the works I selected were abstract and explored techniques or compositions that challenged expected conventions. There were many good works to choose from as the pool of artists made for challenging deliberation and internal curatorial debates. What immediately stood out with the selected pieces were the abstract compositions and an attempt to take the ordinary and do something different to it.

Out of the six finalists it was even harder to pick the top 3 and the 3 runners up. They were all good on one level or another.

The works chosen for the top prizes stood out more as exceptional examples with my initial curatorial criteria, but more so because their compositions and/or subject matter pushed an idea further- more abstract. They also had a technical proficiency that got me looking even closer. Something I always appreciate is a mastery of skill and technique. A good idea can fall short if not executed with the same strength in idea as execution. These pieces also had me wanting to see more- always a good thing with good art!

Congratulations to all the selected artists in the "Inventions and Visions" exhibition, I hope you will enjoy my curatorial selections as much as I did putting it together.
